µ ensemble is a quartet producing quietly ecstatic microtonal drone music. Using a motorised hurdy-gurdy, home-made bagpipes, viola, trumpet and sine-waves, the group produce a wavering cloud of texture and tone designed to melt into the atmosphere and surround the audience like heavy air. µ ensemble (pronounced ‘mu ensemble’) are Alf Brooks, Aisling Marnane, Germán Gabriel García and Joseph Summers. The letter µ is derived from the Egyptian hieroglyph for water, but is now used as a symbol in many applications - denoting, for instance, the service or departure rate in queueing theory, or a gravitational parameter in celestial mechanics.
